A gloomy Friday marking the end of a bad week made the Widmer Brothers Brewing Company Barrel Aged Brrrbon 2013 a fitting beer for my Friday evening.
One of the beers in their Brother’s Reserve line, the Barrel Aged Brrrbon 2013 is a variation of their seasonal Brrrbon Ale, but 90% of it is barrel aged in Bourbon barrels.
This is an excellent Winter beer, or for a Winter-like time such as a cold, gloomy, rainy day/evening.
The vanilla and caramel tones are very striking in this ale, with a subtle oakey flavor. There is a good balance in the maltiness and bitterness (40 IBU), and you won’t find yourself worn out by this beer on the second half of the glass. It is quite smooth, and it isn’t overpowering in any areas.
This is a great sipping beer, yet it is so smooth drinking that you could finish one quickly. But drink with care as it is 9.5% ABV.
I highly recommend giving this a try if you ever come across it.
