This portrait was taken this past Saturday, 2017-11-18, on location in Orange (California) during a photography event held by some friends of mine.
The above shot was taken with an Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark II with the Olympus M.ZUIKO Digital ED 12-40mm F2.8 PRO lens and Singh Ray Vari-ND filter. It was single lit with a Paul C. Buff ABR800 Alien Bee Ring Flash.
The settings in camera were 1/250s, f/3.2, and ISO 200.
It is a pretty simple setup in terms of lighting. Use the sun as the rim light for the hair and position the model so there is little to no hot spots (sunlight) across the front of the face or body. You could actually light this with just a reflector, but when you are solo shooting with no assistant, a ring flash is the next best thing for running and gunning.
