If you’re an India Pale Ale fan, you should try the Karl Strauss Big Barrel Double IPA / Imperial IPA.
Karl Strauss Brewing Company is located in San Diego (CA), but has several restaurants throughout Southern California.
They have a solid beer lineup including several seasonal and limited brews.
The Big Barrel Double IPA is made under their “Costal Reserve” lineup, and is made year round, but limited batches.
Using hops imported from New Zealand, I found this IIPA to have a unique bitterness. There’s a slight sweet hint in the flavor of the beer.
You’ll immediately detect the malt in this brew on the first few sips, then after that, the bitterness kicks with a profound bite. The balance is good, but I want to say that towards the end of the glass, it’s more bitter than malty.
The Big Barrel Double IPA clocks in at 9% ABV and 90 IBU.
Definitely give this a try if you have an opportunity.
