I often hear conversations or read discussions online regarding so-called “sniper rifles”: scoped rifles that have the appearance of military/police style precision rifles.
Quite often, someone in a random conversation at the shooting range will refer to the gun as a ‘sniper’. For example, “I’m looking to build a sniper,” or “I want to buy a scope for my sniper.”
If you ever use the term ‘sniper’ in reference to a gun, you need to stop. You sound like you play too much Counterstrike, Call of Duty, or whatever military style FPS is hot at the moment.
Basically, you sound like a complete moron.
Sniper rifle = gun.
Sniper = person operating a sniper rifle.
And for further classification, just because you have a scoped rifle that looks like a ‘tactical’ rifle, it doesn’t make you a sniper, nor the gun a sniper rifle. Unless your job description specifically states you are a sniper, quit calling yourself a sniper and your gun a sniper rifle.
